Wasted Food Reduction at Merrowvista
Discover how CET helped Merrowvista to cut waste and build community.
The Merrowvista Community & Waste Reduction Values
Merrowvista is a camp and conference center located in the Ossipee Mountains of New Hampshire, managed by the American Youth Foundation. The site spans over 600 acres of natural beauty, including scenic trails and a lake, offering year-round programs ranging from peaceful retreats to summer camps for youth.
Its busiest season is the summer, when they host hundreds of participants for their youth camp program. Merrowvista blends nature with a strong sense of community and a commitment to sustainability.
The Goal
The goal of the project at Merrowvista was to reduce food waste through enhanced meal planning, education, and composting efforts. Merrowvista aimed to involve both staff and camp participants in sustainability initiatives, such as composting food scraps and minimizing “plate waste” during meals.
The solution
With the help of CET (Center for EcoTechnology), Merrowvista implemented various strategies, including educational efforts on portion control, expanding composting programs, and donating surplus food to local organizations.
