Connecticut businesses are called to reduce wasted food under the Connecticut Commercial Organics Recycling Law.
Reducing wasted food can help ensure business avoid penalties, contribute to statewide sustainability efforts, and potentially reduce waste disposal costs.
CET has provided free support to hundreds of businesses to reduce wasted food, donate excess food, and recycle food scraps. We are an environmental non-profit working with partners across Connecticut to offer our grant-funded services to your network.

Is your business subject to the Connecticut’s Commercial Organics Recycling Law? CET can help you determine your obligations.
CGS 22a-226e requires businesses and institutions such as (but not limited to) wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers, supermarkets, resorts, and conference centers to source-separate and recycle food waste and other organic materials. Any business generating 26 tons or more of Source-Separated Organic Material (SSOM, or food waste) annually must comply.
With support from Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, CET offers easy, practical solutions to businesses and institutions across Connecticut at no-cost. With this support, a CET waste reduction expert will meet with you and provide custom recommendations to help you identify ways to reduce your waste.

According to The U.S. Department of Agriculture, 30-40% of the food in America is wasted.
In Connecticut, businesses are facing waste reduction challenges; traditional options for waste disposal are diminishing or becoming more expensive, and costs continue to increase. Recently, I learned that we have a resource to help businesses tackle this problem.
With support from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, non-profit organization CET has provided free support to hundreds of Connecticut businesses to reduce wasted food, donate excess food, and recycle food scraps. An environmental non-profit, they offer free assistance that centers the business, looking at waste through a lens that saves money, improves employee job satisfaction, and integrates sustainable practices into day-to-day operations.
Their website (https://www.cetonline.org/waste-assistance-connecticut), shares numerous resources on addressing food waste in Connecticut.
CET’s assistance can also help businesses to comply with Connecticut’s Commercial Organics Recycling Law (CGS 22a-226e), and associated state reporting requirements.
Handling our waste with care is a way to take care of our community. It opens the door for more food donation, less strain on our landfills, and has the potential to improve the bottom line of our local businesses.
