Sustainability in Healthcare Connecticut Valley Hospital

Discover how Connecticut Valley Hospital is advancing healthcare sustainability through food waste diversion, supporting Connecticut's ambitious goals under Executive Order 1 to reduce waste and protect the environment.

How Connecticut Valley Hospital is Leading the Way in Healthcare Sustainability

In 2019, the state of Connecticut enacted Executive Order 1, setting ambitious goals for state institutions to reduce waste as part of its expanded “Lead by Example” sustainability initiative. Among these efforts, food waste diversion emerged as a key strategy for healthcare institutions like Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) to meet these goals while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Healthcare cafeteria staff managing wasted food

Located in Middletown, Connecticut, CVH sought innovative ways to address food waste. After ending a partnership with a local pig farm, the hospital implemented a new system to store food scraps in a cooler before collection. This proactive approach ensured scraps were kept out of the trash and prepared for environmentally friendly processing.

Collaboration played a significant role in this transformation. The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) connected CVH with the CET (Formerly The Center for Ecotechnology), which provided ongoing support throughout the year. CET assisted with planning, regularly checked on progress, and guided CVH through the process of soliciting bids for a freezer to store food scraps effectively.

CET also facilitated CVH’s partnership with Blue Earth Compost, which now transports the hospital’s food scraps to an anaerobic digestion facility. This collaboration not only reduces waste but also transforms it into renewable energy. To streamline the new processes, CET provided signage, while CVH trained its staff internally to ensure smooth implementation.

Current Impact and Future Goals

Currently, CVH’s main kitchen actively collects and diverts food scraps, contributing significantly to its waste reduction efforts. Looking ahead, the hospital is exploring opportunities to set broader goals to minimize waste generation across its campus, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
