AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer

CET seeks a person with a broad range of qualifications and skills. These include being a people person; the ability to work well with diverse types of organizations and individuals; and the ability to work on all stages of a program from materials development to outreach to providing education and other direct services. Some experience (direct or transferable) in community outreach is important. Strong communication skills are required. Computer experience, graphics and writing ability are valued and used. Most important is that the person is motivated, responsible, professional, interested in community service and has high standards for his/her work.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and train community volunteers to assist CET with its mission
  • Recruit and train community volunteers to assist their town/city to improve environmental programs such as recycling and energy conservation
  • Encourage and facilitate the reduction and proper disposal of hazardous and special wastes throughout the rural communities in western Massachusetts
  • Develop and produce educational and promotional materials on recycling, hazardous and special waste disposal, and waste reduction
  • Promote and expand Business Recycling Services through contact with businesses and awareness activities
  • Conduct public education and provide technical assistance to target groups (youth, seniors, businesses) about toxics use reduction, waste management and renewable energy
  • Provide school educational programs related to energy and resource conservation
  • Document AmeriCorp*VISTA and CET’s work in the community for outreach and education
  • Promote reuse and waste reduction by coordinating community collections of textiles and other materials
  • Assist with Healthy Beginnings - a program that provides environmental education to at risk pregnant women

Energy Advisor / Air Sealing Technician

CET seeks qualified field staff to work in the MassSAVE program. This is a statewide effort to improve the energy efficiency of homes.

This position involves doing energy assessments and air sealing homes. Air sealing reduces drafts and makes homes more comfortable and energy efficient. Air sealing work often involves standing on ladders, kneeling in cramped spaces, working in dusty areas, and being in cold or hot temperatures.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting residential home performance assessments
  • Conducting diagnostic tests
  • Installing energy saving measures like lightbulbs and weatherstripping
  • Creating detailed work orders for major measures like insulation
  • Motivating customers and closing contracts for major measures
  • Performing air sealing in attics and basements using caulk and foam
  • Tracking materials used, time spent, and air tightness achieved

Qualifications:

  • Excellent computer skills
  • Strong math / geometry skills
  • Home renovation or construction experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience working with tools
  • Reliable, hardworking, trustworthy
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to learn and perform a variety of diagnostic tests
  • Use of a reliable vehicle and ability to transport materials
  • Good driving record
  • Passion for the environment and community involvement
  • Availability on some evenings and weekends

This is a full-time position that includes hourly pay, commission, and benefits. The position covers western Massachusetts, with regular meetings in Pittsfield and/or Northampton.

Building Technology Specialist

This is a position involving technical assistance, field work, program development, teaching, and possibly staff and program management. The work will be focused on commercial and residential building technologies related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, indoor air quality, environmentally preferable materials, and water efficiency. The ability to develop and implement new programs is important.

Potential Responsibilities:

  • Performing audits on municipal/commercial buildings to identify opportunities for improved energy efficiency and new renewable energy production
  • Performing audits on commercial buildings to identify opportunities for greening the structure and operations, through material selections, new technologies, and new procedures
  • Assist municipalities in implementation of energy audits
  • Writing reports on audit results, incorporating photos and tables
  • Answering questions for staff members and the public on advanced building technologies like solar water heating, solar PV, geothermal heat pumps, daylighting controls, and ventilation systems, water issues
  • Developing and teaching workshops on advanced building technologies using Microsoft Powerpoint or equivalent
  • Assisting with program development and start-up, including designing new programs, hiring new staff, and training staff
  • Providing LEED commercial certification assistance to owners/developers, commercial architects and contractors
  • Performing audits on residential buildings for energy efficiency and renewable energy
  • Performing energy modeling on commercial and/or residential structures to determine the level of energy efficiency and suggest improvements

Qualifications:

  • Science, engineering, or other technical degree required
  • Excellent computer skills - including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software
  • Ability to prioritize under changing circumstances
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Passion for the environment and community involvement
  • Excellent teaching and facilitation skills
  • Ability to create and work within a budget
  • Knowledge of commercial and residential building technologies/hvac
  • LEED AP certification or ability to earn certification within 1 year of hire
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification a plus
